Back at the table, Janet said, “What was that all about, if you can tell us?”
“He had some nice things to say about this group,” I said, “and how far we’ve all come as a team.”
“You bet your ass we have,” Sam said, “but we had to get rid of one or two rotten apples along the way.”
“He and I talked about that,” I said, “and he agrees. He also told me to turn in an expense report for this shindig, and he would okay it. Can I eat now?”
“Go for it, boss,” Carl said.
I finished my salmon, took a healthy swallow of wine, and listened to the buzz of conversation. When the conversation had stopped for a moment, Mike said, “George, are you the only ‘out’ officer in the JSO?”
“I’m the only fag who’s been willing to say so publicly,” I said.
“We don’t think of you as a fag, boss,” Joe said. “You act just like the rest of us.”
“Yeah, but he’s cuter,” Janet said.
“True, and he sure dresses better,” Sam said.
