Chapter 73

“Three brothers and two sisters.”

“Anyway,” I said, “to answer your question. Mike and I have been best friends since we were eight years old, but we only became a couple a few weeks ago. This place is the first thing we’ve bought as a couple, and it’s kind of special to us. I don’t think we want it invaded by strangers, no matter how tempting the money is. Right, babe?”

“In spades,” Mike said. “That being said, Hugh, find us another place in this price range, and if we like it, we might just buy it and let you rent it out for us.”

“That, I will surely do,” Hugh said.

“You have our numbers and our e-mail addresses,” Mike said. “Just let us know.”

I was listening to the creek. “Is it my imagination, or is the creek a whole lot louder all of a sudden?”

“It’s louder,” Hugh said, looking at the sky. “See those clouds off in the distance? It’s probably raining heavily up there, and all that water has to go somewhere.”
