George Martin and Mike Foster have been best friends since childhood, but recent events have brought them even closer together: Mike has moved into George’s house now that George’s unfaithful boyfriend has been kicked out. It puts Mike in a pinch, because he’s always loved George -- maybe more than a best friend should.<br><br>George doesn’t suspect Mike’s feelings, being wrapped up in his job as the youngest lieutenant in the Jacksonville sheriff’s office and investigating a series of murders. “Anyway,” I said, “to answer your question. Mike and I have been best friends since we were eight years old, but we only became a couple a few weeks ago. “In spades,” Mike said. “That being said, Hugh, find us another place in this price range, and if we like it, we might just buy it and let you rent it out for us.”


“That, I will surely do,” Hugh said.


“You have our numbers and our e-mail addresses,” Mike said. “Just let us know.”


I was listening to the creek. “Is it my imagination, or is the creek a whole lot louder all of a sudden?”


“It’s louder,” Hugh said, looking at the sky. “See those clouds off in the distance? It’s probably raining heavily up there, and all that water has to go somewhere.”
