Chapter 78

I was at my desk by seven thirty, and I found my in-basket full to almost overflowing. I spent some time skimming the paperwork, sorting various documents and reports into three stacks, which in my mind were labeled ‘do it today’, ‘do it tomorrow’, and ‘do it eventually’.

Janet spent an hour bringing me up-to-date on things. She was really excited about the research she was doing on our serial killer and had spent a considerable amount of time over the weekend searching the Internet. She handed me a list of twenty additional cities in which Monique had performed, and she planned to call the relevant authorities in each of those cities before the morning was out.

At nine, I called the captain to see if he was busy and got a green light to come right down to his office. He looked up from his desk as I appeared in his door.

“I see you took my advice,” the captain said. “You look well and truly rested.”
