“I mentioned your offer, and she said it would certainly help. She was genuinely touched.”
“Consider it done,” I said. “The boys will go home with checks when they quit for the day.”
“I tried to call the number on your card, but the call wouldn’t go through,” he said.
“Up at the top of our driveway we get a half-strength signal on our cell phones,” Mike said, “but down here in this little valley, nothing.”
I gave Captain Plott the landline number, and he left. We placed the pizza order and started to enjoy our own lunch. When the pizza arrived, we called the boys in, and they devoured it. We spent an hour reorganizing the cabin until we decided that everything was where it should be. We also finalized a list of pieces of furniture that were needed. That being done, we went outside to talk to the boys. We watched them for a minute, and they seemed to be really enjoying the work. Finally we got their attention.
“Got a minute?” I said.
“Sure.”
