We said good-bye, and I called Mike and gave him the information. After dinner that evening, I told him about our meeting in the sheriff’s office.

“That must have done you a world of good,” he said.

“It did at the time, but I can’t help but wonder if it will make things worse in terms of cooperation down the road.”

“I think that guy realizes that your sheriff can and will go over his head if need be. That ought to keep him in line, don’t you think?”

“Don’t forget, we have an appointment with our lawyer first thing Friday morning. Will that be a problem?”

“Barring a rash of murders Thursday night, I don’t think so.”

We carried our glasses of wine out to the porch and sat in the dark with only the streetlight on the corner for illumination. It was a pleasant time and place to unwind.
