“Now that I’ve seen the job, I do.”

“Can we offer you a glass of wine?” Mike said.

“No thanks,” she said. “I lived with a drunk for twenty years, and I don’t touch the stuff.”

We talked a bit, and I had a brainwave. The twins were sitting on the railing of the deck, listening to us, and I said, “Zeb, why don’t you and Zeke go up to the loft and see what’s on the TV?”

“Thanks,” one of them said, and they disappeared into the cabin.

“Those boys are awfully keen to go to the beach,” I said.

“I know,” Lucinda said. “They talk about it all the time.”

“If Captain and Mrs. Bridges would let them ride to Jacksonville with them when they leave, the boys could spend a week with us. They could go to the beach every day.”

“How would they get there?” she said. “Is it far?”
