Chapter 156

“This will have all blown over by the time we come back up here again,” Mike said.

Saturday morning, as we were loafing on the deck, we had a surprise visitor.

“Good morning, Sheriff,” I said as the sheriff opened the gate at the top of the steps and walked through.

“You guys are taking life easy,” he said.

“That’s what vacations are for,” Mike said.

“What can we do for you?” I said.

He produced a plastic bag with a gun in it. “I thought you might want to have this back.”

“Thanks,” I said. “Have a seat.”

“Can we offer you a cup of coffee?” Mike said.

The sheriff sat down and said “Thanks, but no thanks” to the coffee.

“Were you satisfied with the news coverage?” I said.

“Oh, yes. It never hurts to get your picture out there in front of the voters, even if you didn’t really do anything.”

“It must have been a slow night,” Mike said. “The channel we watched ran just about the entire interview.”
