“So you all are coming tonight?” I
asked.
“If that’s okay?” Wyn said.
“We could always come tomorrow,” Derek
said.
“Tonight’s fine,” I said, “but what if I
decide this is something I don’t want?”
We all sat silent for a moment.
“Then we all stay friends,” Derek said.
There was uncertainty in Derek’s voice. Wyn
looked at him.
“Yeah,” Wyn said. “That’s what we would try
to do.”
“You kind of sound like that won’t work,” I
said.
“I don’t know if I could go back to…” Wyn
began.
“Let’s swim that ocean when we get to it,”
Derek said. “And hope we never get to it.”
I looked at Derek and then at Wyn, and then
addressed them both.
“So this might be it?” I asked.
“No,” Derek said. “We want you in our lives.
You’re special.”
“That’s the problem,” Wyn said. “You’re
really special, and we really want you in our lives. I guess that’s
why we love you.”
“But if that doesn’t work out,” Derek said.
