Chapter 71

Saturday evening, Marco, Luciano, and I dined with la Contessain her apartment. She asked Marco and Luciano a number of questions concerning their daylong meeting with Alessandro, and conversation finally gravitated to the subject that was uppermost in my mind

“Danilo,” she said, “how are you doing with the wine cellar?”

“According to my contact in Boston, the easiest way to turn the cellar into cash would be through one of the major auction houses. Even though a great deal of quick cash might be raised at a sale of ‘the entire cellar of an Italian Conte’, I’m not sure the attendant publicity would be good.”

“Why?” Marco said.

“Do you want the world to think that il Conte di Contiis in financial trouble?”

“Point taken. Continue.”
