Chapter 21

“The ass end of whatever car turns off the street and heads down those ruts.”

“Oh. What can I do?”

“Stay alert.”

Quentin exited the car, moved forward several feet, and crouched behind the overgrown hedge with his camera ready. Several minutes later, a silver, late-model BMW slowed down, then turned onto the rutted track. Quentin focused on the license plate, and was still clicking the shutter when the car was out of sight.

When Quentin was back behind the steering wheel, Nate said, “Are we going to our tree?”

“Let’s see if we can pick them up from here. If I read those maps correctly, we’re not too much farther from that hill at this point.

“BEFORE WE BEGIN our mental eavesdropping this time, Nate, I think we need to be extra careful with our shields.”

“Why?”

“Because, from what we’ve learned listening in on Harv and Marv, the woman they refer to as ‘she’ sounds like a very dangerous adversary.”
