After a short conversation, he hung up and looked at Nate and Dwight. “That was George Martin. We need to go downtown to the Sheriff’s office and give our statements.

“I’m ready,” Dwight said.

“Me, too,” Nate said.

When they were once again in Nate’s car and on the way, Dwight said, “You said ‘sheriff’s office’. Weren’t we in the city limits last night?”

“Jacksonville doesn’t have a police department,” Quentin said. “Sometime back in the sixties, Duval County and the City of Jacksonville formed a consolidated government. The sheriff’s office has jurisdiction over the whole county, except for a couple of small municipalities that opted out of the consolidated government.”
