Chapter 54

“That’s true,” Nate said.

Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of four people, two of whom were the policemen, who’d answered the call from the hospital. Of the other two, the man was wearing a short-sleeved white shirt with captain’s bars pinned on the collar, and the woman, an attractive blonde, was dressed in a charcoal suit over a crisply starched white shirt.

“I’m Captain Marshall,” the man said, “and this young lady is Adele Konig. She’s an assistant State Attorney. I believe you’re already acquainted with the two officers, so why don’t we start by having everyone in the room introduce themselves?”

They did so, and the prosecutor said, “Who wants to tell us what’s going on here?”

“Nate, honey, I think that’s your cue,” Mrs. Wilson said.

“I know, Grandma, but this is the last time I’m going to tell the story today.”

“Do you mind if we record your statements?” Konig said.
