“He says he knows you.”

“Yep.”

“He gave me the name of a gay captain in the JSO, and his private numbers. Told me to call the guy and use his name as a reference.”

“That sounds like Dan—you’ve been a busy boy.”

“Yeah, I guess I have. Listen, I just thought of something you and I need to do.”

“What?”

I told him.

“I like it. If you have time to do it today, please do.”

“The documents will be ready to be signed and witnessed by a quarter to five. Do you have time to stop by?”

“I’ll make time.”

“Good. See you then. Bye.”

I stopped by Marjorie’s desk when I got back to the office. “Bring your pad, please, and close the door behind you.”

“On it.”

When my door was closed, and she was settled in her usual chair, I looked at her and said, “Between us, you and I keep a lot of secrets, don’t we?”

“Part of the job.”

“Well, what I’m going to give you right now represents the biggest secret of all. As such, it needs the seal of the confessional. Okay?”
