Chapter 28

“Exactly, and she was remanded to custody—no bail.”

“Shit.”

“What’s the matter?” Rion said. “Don’t you want her to stay in jail for a very long time?”

“Sure, but I was hoping she’d plead guilty and that would be the end of it.”

“Why?” Rion said.

“Think about it. If she goes to trial, I’ll have to testify, and if her attorney digs too deeply, you may well be outed in the process.”

“Oh.”

“I’ll have a private chat with the state attorney,” Dan said. “She’s a pretty smart lady, and can probably figure out a way to avoid that.”

“If it happens, it happens,” Rion said. “I’ve never gone to any great lengths to hide who I am, but I’ve never run around town announcing it, either. I can handle it either way.”

“Okay,” Dan said. “We’ll be going now—we have friends coming over for dinner.”

“Thanks for stopping by,” I said. “I don’t know when I’ll be allowed to come back to the office.”

“Remember,” Dan said, “follow your doctor’s advice to the letter.”
