Chapter 37

“You’re looking much better,” Captain Martin said. “Last time I saw you, you were lying on a gurney in the ER.”

“Getting there,” I said.

“This is my partner, Mike Foster. Mike, meet Mitch Edwards and Rion Murphy.”

Hands were shaken.

“Have you managed to go back to work yet?” George said.

“First thing in the morning.”

“Good. Don’t be like Mike, and overdo it. When he got out of the hospital after he was shot, I had to take him to the mountains to keep him from going back to work.”

“You got shot?” I said, looking pointedly at Mike.

“Long story. Happy ending,” Mike said.

They said good night and left the restaurant.

“Wow,” I said. “Now we know three couples.”

“This neighborhood is full of them.”

“Even I know that.”

When we got home, I stood naked in front of a full-length mirror, inspecting myself. “Those tan lines are beginning to fade,” Rion said.

“True, but it’ll take all summer to get rid of them totally.”
