Chapter 26

“I’m sorry.” I cleared my throat. “I remember how sad my mother was when my father died.”

“He’s been gone twenty-five years now.”

Everyone jumped. Mark had been silent during most of the meal, to the point where they’d forgotten he was there.

He ignored the people who sat at the table, his gaze fixed on me.

“Yes,” I said. “But Mother has Gregor now.”

“Your momma’s involved with her chef?”

“Yes. They’ve known each other for years, and they both deserve to be happy.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it.” Mopp looked distressed, and Cooper put an arm around his shoulders.

“It’s okay.”

Mark brought his coffee cup to his lips, took a sip, and then set it down. “Suppose you tell us what happened the day Quinn’s cousin was hit by the Hummer?”

I sat back and let Mark take control of the conversation.
