Chapter 38

Once the doors slid shut, I pressed the button marked B, leaned against the back wall of the elevator, and crossed my arms over my chest.

“You’re going into the White House. Rumor has it the Bliss copy of the Gettysburg Address that’s hanging in the Lincoln Bedroom has been stolen.”

His jaw dropped. “People just can’t waltz in and take it off the wall.” He gave it more thought. “That would make it an inside job.”

“Yeah. If it really has been stolen.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Rumor. Right. What do you want me to do, sir?”

“Romero has a little gadget that should verify the authenticity of the document in that room. He’ll explain how to use it. Get into the room and check it out.” The elevator came to a smooth halt in the basement and the doors slid open.”

“And if it’s a fake?”

“Whether it’s genuine or fake, you leave it hanging there, return to the WBIS, and let me know.”

“Yes, sir.”
