Chapter 42

“Some people should have to take a test before they’re allowed to become parents,” Cisco said.

“You’ve got that right.” My cell phone rang, playing “Such a Night.” “Excuse me, Cisco, I have to take this.”

“Sure thing, Mann.”

I went out onto the side patio. “Good afternoon, Mark.”

“Quinn.”

“What news?” I raised my face up to the warm California sun.

“Kirkpatrick’s out of his fucking mind.”

I went still. “The document is where it’s supposed to be.”

“Yeah. I wanted to let you know.”

“Thank you. I’ll tell my uncles to call off the hunt.”

“Good idea, but don’t thank me yet. There’s more.”

“All right, tell me.”

“That shit Anacapri injected into Drum last year?”

“Yes. He was given the antidote.”

“Yeah, well, it turns out she never tested it. The antidote was good for nothing—it’s wearing off and Drum’s getting his memories back.”
