“And when I came home from work one day, there it was.” Bryan took the carafe from the coffeemaker and held it up, silently asking if we wanted any.

“Yes, please.” Quinn set aside my duffel. “You’re right, Mark. This is unusual. Do you like it? I can tell Theo to order it for the house.”

“Uh… okay.”

Both his uncles seemed interested in my reaction to that. It was Quinn’s house; it had been in his father’s family for over a hundred years. What did they expect? That I’d say no to anything he might suggest?

I looked around the room. “Where’s Spike? I expected to find him stuffing his face.”

“He finished and then went up to his room.” Bryan shook his head. “I wish I knew why you keep calling him that.”

“That’s what he called himself when I met him. When he’s ready for me to call him anything else, he’ll let me know.”

“I imagine you’re right.” He handed me a cup of coffee. “You take it black, I believe?”

“Yeah, thanks. I’m kind of surprised Spike didn’t hang around down here.”
