As I’d suspected, with Mark having done a previous sweep, my town house was clean of any other bugs or cameras.

“I imagine since Drum never came here, Kirkpatrick just wanted to keep track of my phone calls.”

“Yeah, it seems like that.”

“Although I have to say I don’t understand why.”

He turned to look in my eyes. “Is Kirkpatrick gay?”

“What?” I felt my jaw drop. “The man is old-school.”

“Doesn’t mean—”

I held up a hand. “I’m not arguing that, Mark. With Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, he could have very well buried his sexuality China-deep. Just give me a moment to wrap my head around it.”

I ran a hand through my hair and paced the hallway that led from the living room to the front door and back again.

“If he is gay, who does he want? A case could be made for either me or Drum.”

“If he’s got any brains, he’ll aim for Drum.”
