Chapter 20

After putting a generous sum of Papa’s money—all gold coins—in a reticule, pulling the drawstring tight,I go back to bed unnoticed.I put the reticule under my bed,and hurriedly lay down just in case Papa told Nora to check on me in the night.

The next morning,I eat breakfast with Mama and Papa and Mr.Williams as if nothing is awry.I wonder if Anna will be forced to the fields today,or if she’s still recuperating in the quarters.

Nothing is said of our conversation the day before.Papa says hello to me and begins talking about cotton prices to anyone who will listen.

After breakfast,it becomes apparent that I am to have lessons.Of all things.I groan inwardly and follow Mr.Williams,Nora a step behind.

As I take my usual seat,Nora doesn’t sit in the doorway to the veranda as Anna did,but stands in a back corner.I’m shocked to realize that I actually miss Anna. What change has come over me?I shake my head and realize that Henry’s desk is,once again, empty.
