Chapter 42

Suddenly a lightbulb flickered on in my head, and I finally found my voice again. “Could that be why my mother left me with Nicola? She was trying to protect me from something like that.”

Merrin’s eyes became soft, and she reached over to take hold of my hand. “Emelia was loyal to a fault. I have no doubt in my mind that if all of what I have said is the truth, then that is exactly what she was aiming to do.”

Suddenly everything made sense even though really nothing in my life made any sense at all.

“Whether I am right or not, we have to get you off campus and get you somewhere safe.” Merrin squeezed my hand, and for a moment, I felt as if I was suddenly connected to my mother. In the maternal way she was holding onto me, and in the fact that she had known Emelia, I could almost imagine that she was her, telling me why she had left me all those years ago without so much as an explanation.
