Chapter 28

A scream caught in my throat the moment I recognised the checked shirt its victim was wearing.

“Mathew!” I screamed even as I darted past Archer who was already hurrying across the open field.

This time my magic burst instinctively to the surface as I called Fire to me once again.

The fireball shot from my hands as I threw them before me. The bright flaming orb scored through the air lighting up the ground beneath and leaving a trail of ash in its wake as it shot the wolf square on its flank.

I continued to run forwards. The howl of agony hurt my ears as Mathew’s limp body dropped from the beast’s mouth. Blades flew, one after another, past my head and buried deep in the scorch mark my attack had left on the wolf’s flank.

The creature’s howling continued even as it burst away from Mathew and began to pound back towards the treeline.
