Chapter 59

“Can’t we just drive in?” I asked. “Merrin drove in when she first brought me to the academy.”

“We’d be better off on foot,” mum insisted. “We’ll draw less attention that way.”

I had to admit that she had a point. Our car would probably be spotted well before we reached the wardings. At least on foot we could use the bushes for cover and get an idea of exactly what we faced before we made it onto campus.

“I imagine that once we pass through the wards, we’ll be set upon pretty quickly but at least this way we can get through before they see us coming and we’ll at least have some element of surprise,” Emelia said, repeating my thoughts back to me.

“Grab your bag, and let’s go.”

I reached into the backseat and grabbed my bag before following her out of the car. The beeping sound the car made when my mum locked it made me jump, and I had to suck in a breath to calm myself.
