Chapter 13

Gretchen snapped her jaws shut but said nothing.

Babe hadn’t thought she would. “Just go away.”

Gretchen scowled at both her and Davy. She ran her gaze over Babe and narrowed her eyes. “When Dr. Gautier learns you’re pregnant, you’ll be out on your ear, you and whoever you’ve been screwing.”

“What part of go away didn’t you understand?”

Gretchen hauled herself to her feet, turned on her heel, and stalked out of the nursery.

Babe didn’t know what was going on, but she didn’t like it or that woman, and she wasn’t going to put up with it. Most of all, she wasn’t going to let them take Davy away from her.

“Hush. It’s okay, kiddo.” She dried his cheeks with the hem of her top, and the teddy bear fell to the floor. She stooped to retrieve it. “Hold on to your teddy. Mama’s gonna take you away from this place.” It was the first time she’d thought of herself as his mama.
