Chapter 14

He didn’t say his teachers were dumb, but Babe could see his impatience with them. She did what she could to stimulate his mind, but she’d been a C student at best, so she took him to the library when she could and turned him loose to read whatever books he chose.

That night, she sat on his bed while she heard his prayers and wondered what he would think of her plan. When he was finished and had climbed into bed, she said, “What do you think about going to see Aunt Delilah?” She’d talked to him about her friend a good deal.

“Can we? That would be amazing!”

“All right, then.”

She’d known Delilah would help, and sure enough, when Babe had called earlier that day, she’d invited Babe and Paul to stay with her in the apartment she shared with two other women.

“But just until I get a job and can find an apartment for Paul and me.”

“Sure, Babe, but there’s no rush.”
