Chapter 82

“Mark. You’re back in DC?”

“Hi, babe. Yeah, I am.”

“How was your weekend?”

“It was a weekend.”

“That good, hmm?” I’d been able to read his moods almost from the beginning, although I wouldn’t tell him that. I was sorry it hadn’t been better. “Did you have to kill someone?” I wasn’t teasing. He could be deadly when he chose—I recalled him almost decapitating one of the men who’d been my guards after I’d been kidnapped by Prinzip—but that made him the best at what he did.

“Quinn, I’m cut to the quick. All I did was take them out for a round of golf.”

“Indeed. Well, I just hope you made sure you wouldn’t get caught.” I loved being able to tease him.

“As if. Anyway, we all have times like that.”

“You don’t.”

“It’s nice to be appreciated.”

“I’ll appreciate you more tonight.”

“I look forward to it. How was your weekend?”

I thought about the man who would be my editor and the server who knew my name. “As you said, it was a weekend.”
