After the holiday, we’d flown up to Fall River with him and confronted the family. The brothers had stood stony-faced, but Mark assured me it was probably more because they didn’t like him than that they disapproved of their brother being gay. His Uncle Steve seemed supportive, but Kit’s mother hadn’t taken the news well. That had come as no surprise to us, since words she’d spoken during our wedding luncheon had given us to understand she didn’t look kindly on homosexuals. Her after-Christmas diatribe had resulted in Kit’s lips becoming a thin white line.

“You want to come back to Arlington with us?” Mark asked him, which caused Lilly to have a minor meltdown. The brothers hadn’t reacted well either.

Kit’s father calmed things down, assured us he had everything in hand, and suggested it might be best if we left.
