Chapter 84

“I…see.” I certainly hadn’t expected that, but now that I studied the boy’s features, I could see a resemblance, and not simply in the shape of his ears or the color of his eyes. There was something in the way…Joe…held himself that was very reminiscent of his father.

Mark, a father. He wasn’t the only one who was dumbfounded.

He leaned closer and whispered, “Is this going to make any difference about how you feel about me?”

“We’re married.”

“Yeah, but—”

“Did you really think it would?” I couldn’t help smiling at him. Foolish man.

“Oh, what? You’re going to tell me you always wanted to make love to a dad?”

“No, varlebena.”

He continued to stare at me, and I realized what a difficult day this must have been for him. To suddenly discover he had a child, especially when he’d always been so careful…I did wonder how that had happened.

“Truthfully? As long as you’re the dad, yes, I would.” I turned to the boy. “I’m Quinton Mann. It’s nice to meet you, Joe.”
