“You’ll have to give Joe the code,” I reminded him.

“Yeah, I will.” One of the things that surprised…but pleased…him was that I hadn’t objected to having six locks on our front door, an action that would have been foolish on my part, when it was obvious he had my best interests at heart. “It’s too late tonight. I’ll take care of it in the morning.”

I thought about what had gone on with my publisher Friday afternoon and Saturday evening. Mark had a point when he said it was too late. I’d tell him about it tomorrow morning.

We climbed to the second floor and went toward the far end of the house “Now, this will be your room,” he told Joe.

“This is for me?” The boy seemed overwhelmed.

“Yeah.”

“It’s as big as our last apartment. And the bed.” Joe stroked the comforter. “My whole class could sleep here.”

“Not quite.”

“That was hyperbole, Dad.”
