I pulled his head down and kissed him. It had been a long weekend without his kisses, and he must have felt the same way, because I thought he was going to devour me.

“Soon, babe. Soon,” I murmured. He groaned into my mouth, then cradled my cheek for a moment that wasn’t long enough before he went to gather up the plastic bags. I was tidying the desk when Joe returned.

“Do you want a glass of milk?” Mark asked his son.

“No, thank you.” The events of the day were catching up with the poor boy; he really looked exhausted.

“Okay. Are you going to have trouble falling asleep?”

“No.” Joe stiffened. “Why would you think…?”

“That nap you had this afternoon?”

He shrugged. “I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Ma…” His breath hitched. “She always said so.” He fiddled with the waistband of his sweatpants. “Um…Dad? Where’s your room? Ma was always pretty close and…”

“It’s on the other end of the house. That gonna be a problem?”
