Chapter 98

“Uh…there’s one other thing, Dad. Ma said I shouldn’t let go of the bear, because she put a flash drive in him. Uncle Gunther had given it to her, and according to him, it’s supposed to have all my records on it.”

“Okay, this will call for a little surgery.” And I didn’t have my knife.

“Here, babe.” Quinn handed me a pair of scissors.

Joe’s expression tightened a little, but he didn’t fall apart as he had at Theo’s. Sure he wouldn’t. He was my kid, after all.

“Thanks.” I snipped the surgical stitches until I had a space of a couple of inches. “Joe, your hands are smaller than mine. I want you to reach in and feel around, see if you can find the flash drive.”

It didn’t take long before he withdrew his hand and held up the flash drive in triumph.

“Can I see what’s on it?” Joe asked.

“Shut off the frying pan, would you?” I asked Quinn.

He did as I asked, and the three of us trooped into my study.
