I kissed the corner of his mouth. “My pleasure.” I took a sip, set aside my cup, and speed-dialed his mother, calling the landline.

“Good morning, Mark.”

“Morning, Portia.”

“Shouldn’t you be at work?”

“I took the day off.”

“Oh? I hope everything is well?”

“Yeah. It’s just…Would it be all right if we came over? We…uh…have something personal to talk to you about.”

“Of course, but…Quinton?” Her voice was contained, but I could still hear the concern in it.

“No. He’s okay.”

Quinn tapped my shoulder, then leaned in and spoke into the phone. “Everything is fine, Mother. We’d like to bring a guest with us as well.”

“Of course. I’m very curious.” But she wouldn’t ask, because we hadn’t offered, and we were on an unsecured line.

Quinn raised an eyebrow, and I nodded. “Mother, we have a question for you. Would you mind if Mark puts you on speaker? The bacon is going to burn if I don’t get back to it.”

“Not at all, sweetheart.”
