Chapter 126

Mark grinned at him. “Yeah.”

I couldn’t help grinning myself, even as I studied the photograph of Idiot number three, who I’d portray. As soon as Ms. King finished with Howard, she’d begin work on me. As for Mark, he would apply what he felt was necessary for himself.

Not long after takeoff, Ben-David’s voice came over the intercom. “Mr. Vincent to the cockpit, please.”

I raised an eyebrow, but Mark just shrugged. He pressed on the final appliance, hauled himself out of the seat beside me, and made his way to the front of the jet.

I found a copy of The Economist in the seat pocket and opened it just as my cell phone played “The Flower Duet,” the music I’d assigned to Mother’s calls.

We hadn’t left Great Falls all that long ago, and there should have been no reason for her to call. I didn’t bother with the niceties.

“What’s wrong, Mother?”

“Joe is missing.”

I felt cold. “What happened?”
