Howard kept his face blank, whether because Ms. King had admonished him to not move a muscle while she applied the latex that would elongate his cheekbones and give him a lantern jaw or because Perry was his director and it was clear neither Mark nor his son had much respect for the man. As for Ms. King, she just leaned forward and continued to do her job.

Mark narrowed his eyes at the boy and muttered, “This is what happens when I let myself get distracted.”

“They don’t know you’re my dad.” Joe peered up at Mark through those Coke-bottle lenses. “Not the way you look right now. They’ll think you caught me. I bet if you said you wanted a raise, that witch would give it to you.”

Mark’s look morphed from disgruntled to considering.
