Chapter 22

Jake looked to his right, and saw a sheet of lined yellow paper, obviously from a yellow pad, taped to the dashboard. He leaned forward to read the first few lines of typewritten notes.

“I didn’t see a typewriter in your office.”

“That’s because it’s usually tucked away out of sight.I have one of those old-fashioned desks where the surface that holds the typewriter folds down and under the desk when you’re not using the typewriter.”

“These instructions are pretty straightforward,”Jake said.“Anyone could follow them.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that,”Josh said.“I’ve known a couple of people whohad absolutely no geographic sense, and those instructions would have stumped them totally.”

“You’re kidding!”

“Not in the least. We’re going to head in a southwesterly direction until we reach a certain point, then make two sharp left-hand turns, and head back by a different route.”

“Is that what you always do?”
