Chapter 15

One woman stared after them as Dex led Seth toward the rear of the gondola, her green eyes serious and her mouth set in an angry, flat line. Seth squinted, trying to place her, but she turned and disappeared into the crowd before Seth could decide if they’d met previously. He shrugged and followed Dex.

His lover had a few words with the airshipsman, a young man with alarmingly short hair. Clockwork prosthetics lined the back of his skull and disappeared down his spine; he moved with simple grace, but each gesture was accompanied by a familiar whine and click of gears.

“I’m a colleague of Dr. Kerohen’s. She’s expecting me, actually. This is my friend, Lord Maitland. I’ve arranged a special tour of the smithy, before dinner begins.” Dex removed a few gilt-edged tickets from his jacket and presented them to the cogged airman.
