Chapter 20

Dex, situation forgotten in marvel, craned his neck. “What is this place?”

Lucy didn’t answer, her eyes shuttered with loathing. Her scent spoke for her. She was afraid and fear made her angry.

Seth risked putting his hand on Dex’s shoulder, drew the scientist away from his close inspection of the door mechanism. “Not now, Dex,” he said.

Lucy prodded them down endless hot corridors. At times they were lost in thick clouds of steam. Several times, Seth considered attacking their captor, but resisted the urge. He had no idea where they were; it was senseless to attempt escape without being able to get out of the underwater facility.

Finally they were forced into a large, open auditorium. Lucy seemed to relax, drawing a deep lungful of cooler air. Some of the tension leeched out of her stiff shoulders, but the gun in her hand didn’t waver from Dex’s spine.
