“Now I’d like to hear about the story with Ben, because now everything seems to make sense. I know Ben is gay. Well, I figured it out when I saw him with…a man. In a car. Anyway. Did he do something to you when he you were kids? Please, don’t tell me that he hurt you.”
Laura was trembling slightly and Alex hastened to hold her hands.
“No, no. No, Mom, don’t worry. Nothing so bad, really. It was just me…”
Alex explained to his mom what had happened many years ago and Daniel stayed quiet, listening to him again, wondering if Alex would be a different man without that experience.
At the end of the story, Laura took a deep breath.
“I always wondered what was wrong with you. Now it’s clear that there’s nothing wrong with you, you were just being stupid, yes.”
Alex’s grin vanished. “Well, thanks, mom. Really.”
Laura smiled sweetly. Sweetly like a crocodile, Daniel thought.
