Chapter 54

By then they were several blocks from the Wright house. Dirk heard police sirens and wondered if they were heading there. He was not, however, going to suggest they go back and find out.

Twenty minutes later they were back at Dirk’s apartment.

With Galvez in tow, because Dirk wanted to introduce him to the Powells, the two men entered the pawnshop. Jesse saw them and came over. “Fey said things got a bit hairy.”

“Just a bit,” Dirk agreed, tapping his bag where the bottles of wine were carefully nestled, “but we got away free and clear. Jesse, this is Al Galvez. I’m sure Fey’s mentioned him.”

“She has.” He held out his hand. “Jesse Powell.”

As he shook it, Galvez said, “Good to meet you.”

Dirk smiled to himself as the two men sized each other up. Then, telling Galvez that he had business to take care of, he went over to the cage. Powell buzzed him in and they went into the back room.

“You were successful?”
