Chapter 69

Maverick nodded. “But not anyone else. He knew what car he was looking for.”

“So someone, and twenty-to-one it’s one of Pichot’s people, must have seen us leaving the apartment and followed us from there. We know the car wasn’t bugged. Once we left the pet store lot, they kept a tail on us until we got onto the highway.”

“If that’s how it went down, they’re good,” Maverick said. “I was watching for something like that.”

“They wouldn’t be working for him if they weren’t. They get the word back to him; he uses his connections to have the troopers looking for my car. Probably told them I was wanted in New Orleans for…whatever.”

“Why not come after you themselves?” Jesse asked.

“After what happened at the club, they’d figure I’d be watching for anything out of the ordinary. So Pichot gets the troopers to pull me over, and I get shot resisting arrest.”

There was a long pause as they thought about that. Then Maverick said, “A dirty trooper, working for him.”
