Chapter 19

There was a knock on the door and Nate looked up from the book he was reading on his tablet. Lucian was still deeply asleep. He was still on some painkillers, which was totally understandable. He needed a great deal of rest and Nate was glad to see him pain-free. The door opened and someone—a nurse—stood there.

“Mr. Lockwood, you have a phone call.”

Right. Cellphones were not allowed to be used in the hospital and Helen had told him she’d call him there if something happened.

“From Mrs. Salvatore?”

“Yes.”

“Umm.” He hated to leave Lucian alone but…

“He’ll be all right. We’ll keep an eye on his room and make sure no one gets past this door.”

“Ah, all right. Sure.” He pointed outside. “At the nurses’ station?”

“The call? Yes.”

With Lucian’s absence and Nate’s time spent mostly at the hospital, Helen was taking on almost all of the responsibility for the running of the station. Nate felt bad about it but she told him not to worry.
