“Stop,” the doctor ordered. He peered into Nikoloz’s face once the door had been opened and the lights turned on. Nikoloz could feel something pouring from his nose and dripping from his chin. His whole face throbbed now. The doctor spoke firmly. “Continue walking.”


“His nose is bleeding,” said Miss Beaty.


“He’ll be fine. Let’s see how he got in without anyone spotting him.”


Nikoloz made his way through both rooms to the entry chute and stopped beneath it. “Amazing,” the doctor said, peering up at the chute. “A little hole for a little mouse. I wonder how he got past the guards and the dogs.”


Nikoloz prayed that they wouldn’t make him show them where Vikushka was hiding. He prayed his partner had already figured out something was wrong when the factory lit up, was even now on his way to Rapid City for backup.
