Chapter 10

The lodge was set in an open space with forest all around it. Duff joined us, asking Ian, “What’s the layout inside?”

“Do you have paper and a pen?”

Of course I did, and I handed them to him. He took the other desk chair and began sketching. When he finished he had an almost architectural rendering of both floors on two separate sheets of paper.

“This is the garage. It connects to the lodge through a foyer.” He pointed to his first drawing. “This is the dining area with the kitchen here.” He labeled them and the great room to the right, which took up a third of the ground floor. “There are large picture windows on the exterior wall of the great room.’’

“You have a good memory,” I commented.

Ian smiled dryly. “I hated my time there enough I think it implanted in my mind. There’s a master bedroom, Steve’s of course, here.” It was on the other side of the wall from the fireplace in the great room.
