Chapter 46

Now I was being stupid. And totally harebrained. And scared. Who knew loving someone could be this frightening. All right, I did. It’s not as if I’ve never loved anyone before, way back in the dark—okay I’m not that old, so the middle ages. And a few times since then, but nothing that lasted.

The door to my apartment flew open and Ephram stood there, smiling shyly. I held out my arms. He came into them, we kissed, and all my fears vanished.

I think he read my mind because he said, “I was terrified—until now. Afraid you…” He chewed his bottom lip. “You might have second thoughts.”

“The only thoughts I’m having—” I kissed him again, “—are of you, naked in the middle of my bed while I make love to you.”

“While wemake love,” he replied with a soft smile. “It isa two-way street. Or should be.”

“Absolutely.” Taking his hand, I led him to the bedroom.

“It does exist,” he quipped, pointing to my bed.

As I began to unbutton his shirt, I replied, “You thought otherwise?”
