“You did good today, Frankie,” Gregory said.
The wind howled and the rain began again. It started to sing a prairie lullaby that put them to sleep as well.
“Me? I almost shot her. You’re the one that saved the baby and helped her feed it.” Gregory beamed in bed at the compliment as Frank continued, “Maybe that’s what we need. A baby to take care of…” His voice trailed off as he drifted to sleep.
“Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. We need to make sure we can support ourselves before we add any more mouths around our table,” Gregory managed to reply before he drifted off, too
