Chapter 60

The rest of their day consisted of packing the house and stable and loading it all into the wagon. At one point in the afternoon, Frank noticed James was nowhere to be seen.

“Greg, where’s James?” he asked, not really looking up or stopping what he was doing.

“I don’t know. I thought he was with you,” Gregory answered. “Go see if he’s helping Ma.”

Frank went inside to find Viola finished with the kitchen stuff and working on the bedroom.

“Ma, is James with you?” Frank called out, his voice echoing throughout the house.

Viola stuck her head out the bedroom door. “No, I thought he was outside with you men.”

“Neither Gregory nor I have seen him lately. Let’s go check with Harley.”

They went out the back door, and just as Frank was going to yell for Harley, he looked up at the crosses on the northern ridge. There among them were the silhouettes of James and Sally.

“You’d better make sure he’s all right,” Viola counseled.
