“And now we’ve lost the entire crop for the year,” Frank told them again.

“What about your savings?” Harley asked.

“We had such a good year last year that we sank everything we had into this year’s crop. We purchased extra seed and worked hard in the spring to get everything plowed and planted,” Frank explained.

Viola reached into her apron pocket as tears welled up in her eyes.

“Now don’t get all mushy on us. We’ll be fine. We’ve probably got enough supplies to get to Dodge City, Kansas, and we should be able to get there by winter,” Gregory said.

“We’ll get jobs or something until we can make the money we need to get to Denver City,” Frank chimed in.

“We’ve got to at least get the boy there to fulfill his parent’s last wishes,” Gregory pleaded with his mother, expecting her to throw a fit about them being broke.
