Chapter 70

The pressure that people like James grew up under was immense, and him being an only child just piled it on even more. Severe expectations from preschool followed him through his entire life. Add to that the dominant father figure that James was saddled with that he knew from their business dealings together, and the pressure to conform and step up to those expectations was overwhelming. He understood James better than his nephew or James himself might think, and his heart broke for both of them.

“What are you thinking?” Matt eyed him uneasily.

“I think we can go look for your boy, if you want to.”

Matt smiled with obvious relief at Jake not changing his opinion of James. “I have no idea where to start, though,” Matt said. “I just realized today that there’s still so much I don’t even know about him.”

“But you know he loves you and really cares about you. He told his father he did. That’s enough for now. He’ll come back to you.”
