Chapter 71

“How so?” Matt asked.

“I remember the day I brought you home from the hospital. Lord, twelve years ago. Your brother’s arm was a vice around your neck. He didn’t let go, and you never moved away from him. Then you asked me when your mom was coming home because she said you were having mac and cheese. I nearly died of a broken heart right then.”

“I’m sorry.” Matt looked off into the distance, seeing something in his own world. He was pressed impossibly close to Jake, as though drawing strength for every breath from him.

“What are you apologizing for? You were the sweetest kid in the world.”

“I don’t remember anything from that day, though. What’d you tell us?”

“I didn’t say anything. I just scooped you guys up and took you to your dad’s parents for mac and cheese.”

“That was the best thing you could do. I miss Grandma Mary.”
